Biography
What makes photography a strange invention is that its main raw materials are light and time.
(John Berger)
My name is Daniele Macrì and I live in Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy), precisely in Muggia in the province of Trieste, the last Italic bulwark in the northeast. I have never liked and do not like "Tags", so I do not define myself as an "amateur" photographer... to be precise, I don't even define myself as a photographer. One thing for sure is that photography has never been a profession for me; let's say it's a way of expressing myself through unconventional means.
I like to photograph everything, I don't have a defined connotation within "Photography", but I like to experiment, I like to seek aesthetics in all its forms, from the simplest to the most twisted.
Today, after surpassing 40 years, I find myself having to talk about myself, and I can assure you that it is not easy, I hope that one day this task will be delegated to someone else, but for now, I have to do it.
I was born 42 years ago in Calabria, raised in a humble family, I approached photography as a child, using an old Vivitar camera from my parents to take pictures on occasions like holidays or school trips.
Around 10/11 years old, my parents gave me my own camera for Christmas, a compact one that resembled a reflex, and from there I started taking and printing photos, most of which were to be discarded.
As a self-taught person, I began to discover the basics of both analog and digital photography.
Then, unfortunately, due to study and work reasons, I set aside this passion until about 11 years ago when I decided to attend a creative photography course.
After this, another pause, until a few years ago when I started taking this passion seriously with both hands and moving forward with it.
I was fortunate to meet a photographer (now a friend) who allowed me to attend advanced and specific photographic courses, from portrait to image post-production, and studying in more depth the great national and international photographers reignited that dormant flame within me.
And here I am, wandering around with the reflex in hand and a hunger for knowledge that does not want to be satisfied.
As of today, I have not yet decided which photographic genre to follow, although, for now, portrait and reportage most align with my tastes and skills, always trying to give my personal touch.
One thing for sure is that in my opinion, photographs should remain "Mute", without captions or explanations, so that each individual image has the opportunity to express itself independently; it will be the individual viewer who will capture the meaning or emotion from the shot.
In August 2019, I inaugurated my first itinerant personal exhibition entitled
"Chernobyl, ... and then the future ... "
